All in the Family: Jason Marti Is High Point Fire Chief

Jan 25, 2017

A longtime family tradition continued in the High Point Volunteer Fire Co. in Harvey Cedars as Jason Marti was recently named chief for 2017. His younger brother, Justin Marti, is the deputy chief.

Andrew Wahlberg was named company president.

Jason Marti takes over for another brother, Sean Marti, who was chief for the past 13 years. Sean is also a sergeant in the Harvey Cedars Police Department.

“I grew up with the fire company,” said Jason, 43. “My brothers and I all did.”

Their father, the late Harry Marti, served as fire chief for more than 20 years and also served as the borough’s mayor. The fire company’s annual golf tournament in September bears his name.

In June, Jason coordinates the fire company’s Striper Shootout fishing tournament.

“I’ll begin planning that shortly,” said Jason, who is co-owner of Marwood Construction Co., which was founded by his father and Don Wood in 1962.  “For the year, we’ll continue to work hard on our training and keep up to date as possible with equipment. It’s also very important for all our fire companies to be on the same page since we go on many mutual-aid calls.”

Aside from Harvey Cedars, High Point also covers sections of North Beach and Loveladies in Long Beach Township. He said the company has between 30 and 40 active members.

“We’re always looking for new members,” he said.

Wahlberg, who is a sergeant in the Beach Haven Police Department, is in his 27th year with the company. A former lieutenant and assistant chief, he takes over for Craig Coddington.

“We’re looking to take our training to the highest level,” he said. “We have to be prepared as best we can to serve our community.”
