Barnegat Girls Volleyball Beats Manchester, Falls to Toms River North
The Barnegat High School varsity girls volleyball team split its first two games of the season, defeating Manchester in straight matches, 25-11 and 25-17, in the Sept. 9 opener and then dropping two straight matches, 25-19 and 25-12, to Toms River North Sept. 12.
Against Manchester, senior outside hitter Roxy Urso had two aces and two kills. Senior setter Emma Lloyd had three kills and two assists, while senior defensive specialist Tymera Crudup had five digs.
Head coach Karla Jennings said Urso, Lloyd and Crudup are major keys to the season.
“Roxy didn’t play last year because she was injured,” said Jennings. “She’s fully healthy now and has the potential to be a very dominant outside hitter. I think she could have a great season.”
In the loss to Toms River North, sophomore Lauren Walters recorded six kills, while Crudup had 11 digs.
“We didn’t play very well in that game,” said Jennings. “We may lose a few early on as some of our younger players get acclimated. But I think come October, we’ll be fine.”
Last year’s team finished 18-5, and won the Shore Conference B-South title for the third straight year, sporting an 11-1 mark. The Bengals lost in the quarterfinals in the NJSIAA Group II playoffs.
Key seniors lost from that squad include outside hitter Morgan Ridgway, middle hitters Amy Bruno and Cami Sita, defensive specialist Amanda Muller and outside hitter Jordan Erskine.
“I think our younger players learned a lot from them,” Jennings said. “They set good examples for dedication and teamwork.”
Other seniors are Deava Gall, defensive specialist, and Mary Rawley, right-side hitter. Rounding out the squad are junior outside hitters Tommi Traister and Kim Zalewski, junior outside/middle hitter Ginalee Erskine, sophomore defensive specialists Molly McEneany and Kara Ferigno, sophomore middle hitter Sydney Boyer and freshman outside/right side hitter Gilana Fitzmaurice.
The Bengals’ next match is Monday, Sept. 19, at home against Pinelands Regional at 3:45.
