Barnegat Gymnastics Team Has New Coach, Solid Core
It is a new dawn for the Barnegat High School gymnastics team and coach Morgan Capezzera.
“This is my first year as the gymnastics coach at Barnegat High School,” said Capezzera. “The team has seen a lot of change in leadership over the past couple of years. For the juniors, I am the third coach they have had in their three years at the school. I am hoping that, with consistent leadership in the years to come, the girls will be able to gain more confidence in the team and in themselves and will soar to new heights, figuratively and literally.”
It is interesting that Capezzera is talking about consistency and confidence – her day job is as a certified school psychologist. A major part of any coach’s job is to convince a team it can bond, work hard together, improve and win. That’s especially important with a struggling program.
The Barnegat gymnastics team went 2-9 in 2015.
“We definitely plan to beat that this year!” said Capezzera.
The new coach has a solid core to work with in three returning varsity athletes: juniors Kylie Picaro, Heather O’Connor and Madison Neuner.
“Kylie does all around, all events,” said Capezzera. “Heather does vault, bars and beam. Maddy does vault, bars and floor.”
Picaro took a significant step forward as a sophomore when she finished third in the vault in the 2015 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association South Jersey Tournament.
“Gabrielle DeLillo is a freshman and is going to be a significant asset to the team,” said Capezzera. “She competes all around, on all four events. Christina Golaszewski is also new (a freshman) and is working to sharpen her skills.”
Rounding out the Barnegat varsity roster is senior Amanda Lozito, who is injured to start the season.
