Barnegat Looks to Rezone Land for Condos
An ordinance introduced last week by the Barnegat Township Committee will change an area on Lighthouse Drive from retail to neighborhood commercial zone. Township Administrator Martin Lisella said the land is located just south of the proposed Barnegat Crossings.
“Quite a few years ago, it was going to be developed for a retail store and a storage facility,” said Lisella. “But that never came about.”
He said Cardinale Enterprises, based in Monmouth County, is looking to build 150 condominium units.
“We haven’t received any formal plans from them yet,” he said.
Cardinale is certainly familiar with the territory, as the company was the original developer of Barnegat Crossings, but late last year sold the 13.8-acre site to Extell Development of Lakewood. The development is now known as “Exit 67,” named for the Garden State Parkway exit nearby.
“Because Exit 67 will have a mixed use combining businesses and age-restricted apartments, it also is located in a neighborhood commercial zone,” said Lisella.
Ground was broken for that development in 2014. When completed, it will have 90,000 square feet of commercial space. Late last year, Extell put in a base coat of asphalt on the tract, and also completed drainage system and infrastructure work.
“In about two weeks, the township building department will be ready to issue them a permit, so then they can start building a foundation,” said Township Engineer John Hess.
He said Extell has received permits from the Pinelands Commission.
“As long as there are no other delays, I think construction should be starting in the spring,” Hess said.
