Beware Electric Utility Phone Scam, Long Beach Township Police Advise
The Long Beach Township Police Department is cautioning residents to beware of a new phone scam. According to the police, some homeowners have received calls with a recorded message stating an Atlantic City Electric bill is overdue, and the residence’s power will be turned off without immediate payment. An individual then attempts to obtain credit card information.
“The number on the Caller ID is 844-271-8421, and the automated voice options sound authentic,” the police noted. “The caller advises your account is past due and to avoid having your service shut off, attempts to collect credit card information for payment.
“This is a fraud,” the police emphasize. “Do not give out any personal and/or financial information over the phone. If you have an account, they should be able to look up your info in their system.”
LBTPD asks that area residents report similar calls to Atlantic City Electric and to their local police department. —J.K.-H.
