Blue Claws, Anything Floats Races in Harvey Cedars
Do you have a speedy blue claw crab at home? If so, Long Beach Island PBA Local 175 invites you to enter it in the blue claw crab races planned Saturday, Aug. 18, as part of a triple-header of events in Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars. Registration begins at 10 a.m.; races start at 11.
Entry fee is $3; cost is $5 to rent a crab donated by Harvey Cedars Shellfish Co. or Boulevard Clams in Surf City. Proceeds go to the PBA scholarship fund. Both adults and children are welcome to participate. The “track” is an 8- by 12-foot ramp with a grade of 20 percent.
The event starts with several races, followed by a playoff round featuring all the winners.
The Harvey Cedars Activities Committee’s “Anything Floats” race goes on that afternoon at 4 in the bay off the Sunset Park pavilion. There is no registration fee.
“People can build their own boats out of anything they want,” said Deputy Mayor Judith Gerkens, activities committee liaison. “It’s a good family activity, as parents and children can work on it together. Everybody gets a good laugh.”
Also on that day, the park will be the site of a Blue Claw Craft Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Barnegat Light First Aid Squad will be selling food.
“Most of the items displayed are geared toward the kids,” said Gerkens. “It’s something to do while they’re at the park for the crab races.”
