Ex-Bengal McCoy Having a Royal Summer
Former Barnegat High School pitcher Mark McCoy is wrapping up his second year in the Kansas City Royals minor league system.
The Royals selected McCoy in the 29th round of last June’s amateur draft following his junior year at Rutgers University. The lefty reliever began this season with the Class A Wilmington (Delaware) Blue Sox, but struggled there and was moved to another Class A team in Lexington, Ky.
With Lexington, the 22-year-old sports a 4-2 record, with a 4.81 ERA in 21 games. In 43 innings, McCoy has recorded 38 strikeouts.
“I’ve gone through some ups and downs, like a lot of players in the minors do,” he said.
When the season ends shortly after Labor Day weekend, McCoy said he’ll take a little break and then report to the fall instructional camp in Arizona.
“Hopefully, I can get better there and maybe next year move up to a higher level in the minors,” he said.
His father, Barnegat varsity baseball coach Dan McCoy, said his son feels comfortable in the relief role.
“In today’s game, relievers are much more important than they used to be,” he said. “I know he had a tough beginning of the season with Wilmington, but he seems to have straightened out. I think Mark is pretty good at figuring what he needs to do. He’s had some bumps along the way, but a lot of kids do.” —E.E.
