The Ocean County fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that severely damaged a residence in Barnegat Township Monday evening.

Township Fire Chief Scott Docherty said that at 7:42 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Bengal Boulevard near the Lincoln Court intersection. He said when they arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of the two-story house.

“Neighbors at first advised command that the house was originally vacant; however, several minutes later stated they believed someone had been staying there,” said Docherty. “Units were updated and a crew was sent into the residence to perform a search for any possible victims. It turned out nobody was home and all members were safe and accounted for.”

He said the fire was extinguished at approximately 8:15 p.m.

“It looks like a total loss between fire, smoke and water damage,” said Docherty.

He said the Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Co. assisted the local firefighters, and the Waretown Volunteer Fire Co. was on standby at the Barnegat firehouse in case another alarm was called in.

Cars leaving the nearby high school parking lot at the conclusion of the boys basketball  playoff game were rerouted to Pennsylvania Avenue.  —E.E.
