Former Southern Regional Volleyball Star Liam Maxwell Tearing It Up in College
Former Southern Regional High School volleyball star Liam Maxwell has been going strong at the collegiate level so far this spring. In fact, he’s flat-out tearing things up. The Belmont Abbey College freshman outside hitter recently had such a solid stretch that he was nominated for the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week and was a national Player of the Week honorable mention for the collegiate volleyball website Off the Block. He also was selected as Off the Block’s national Defensive Player of the Night for March 28.
During a contest against Pfieffer College, Maxwell delivered 17 digs to go along with 20 kills, as the Crusaders (7-16) scored a 24-26, 26-28, 25-17, 25-18, 15-10 victory over the Falcons. His defensive effort was a team best for the season.
The week before, Maxwell drilled 12 kills and added six digs and an ace during a 27-25, 18-25, 21-25, 19-25 loss to Lees-McRae College on March 24, which preceded a 15-kill, three-ace effort during a 22-25, 20-25, 27-29 loss to California Baptist College on March 24.
However, Maxwell since has been one of the Crusaders’ more productive players as well. During a 22-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 win over Emmanuel College, he managed 10 kills and nine digs on March 31, followed by 11 kills during a 25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 25-18 win over North Greenville University on April 1.
For the season, Maxwell leads the Division-II Crusaders with 215 kills and 27 service aces, and is second in digs with 114. He also has a team-leading 261 points heading into the final two regular-season contests against Limestone College (April 4) and Erskine College (April 7). —D.B.
