People say they’re making a special trip to the Island for the annual Free Donut & Coffee Day held by Shore Good Donuts at its Ship Bottom location, 1211 Long Beach Blvd. The date is Saturday, March 25, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This rite of spring is the fifth year that owners Todd Hunt and Richard Platt have extended the warm gesture.

Free Donut & Coffee Day has happened “ever since the storm,” Hunt said, referring to the big one, Sandy, when homeowners and helpers needed every bit of sweetness that could be found. And it caught on.

“There was such a nice response that we said, we’ll continue to do this in Ship Bottom, make it a tradition,” Hunt recalled. (Shore Good Donuts has since opened a second location in Beach Haven, but that shop doesn’t open until May.)

So, what originated as a sweet gesture for the firefighters and police and community is now an every-year event on the Ship Bottom business scene.

Shore Good Donuts lovers will get good news on opening day about a favorite flavor, too. Key lime, previously a special, will now have a permanent place on the everyday menu.

This is the seventh year since Shore Good Donuts opened. After opening weekend, March 25 and 26, the springtime schedule will be Friday through Sunday until Memorial Day weekend, when the extended summer schedule will begin.

For a little more background on the shop, it showcases the process of doughnuts being made. Customers watch their confections being made to order and served warm. Choose from unique specialty doughnuts or create your own from a variety of icings and topping combinations. Ice cream is among the other treats found in the store.
