‘Great Courses’ Circulate at Beach Haven Library
The Beach Haven Public Library has announced it is offering selections from the Great Courses, a series of college-level audio and video courses produced and distributed by The Teaching Co. in Chantilly, Va. Anna Serbek, library technician, invites the public to hear an introductory talk on the new service Thursday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m.
“These are geared for people who want to enrich their knowledge on a variety of subjects,” said Serbek. “Someone might want to learn more about American history or the Bible, or live a healthier lifestyle.”
Twenty-two courses are available; a sample of titles includes “Discovering Your Roots: An Introduction to Genealogy,” “The New Testament,” “Our Night Sky,” “The Everyday Gourmet: The Lost of Art of Cooking,” “Practicing Mindfulness: An Introduction to Meditation,” “Understanding Investments,” “Understanding the Mystery of Human Behavior,” “The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World” and “How to Listen to and Understand Great Music.”
“Each course comes with a DVD and a companion book,” said Serbek. “You can go through the course at your own pace.”
Overall, the Great Courses series has 550 subjects, and many of the teachers are the leading authorities in their fields, such as astrophysicist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson.
“It’s possible we could add more courses down the road,” Serbek said. “We’ll have to see how we do with the ones we’re starting with.”
