Green Takes First Spot Amid Jersey Sailors During Optimist Championships at BBYC
With sailors competing from throughout the country, Bridget Green made her mark in the USODA New Jersey Optimist Championship on Aug. 22-23.
Sailing the waters of the bay near Brant Beach Yacht Club, Green finished the six-race regatta first among girls in the red division of the Gold fleet and was the first Jersey sailor among the 108 boats in the fleet.
The 13-year-old finished 11th overall with 40 points. After placing 11th in the first race, Green followed up with eighth- and 17th-place spots. In Race 4, Green took 15th, then grabbed her highest position of the regatta when she swiped the second spot during the fifth race. She then took fourth in the final run, while the 17th-place finish was dropped.
Among the girls, Green finished one point ahead of Bay Head Yacht Club’s Colleen O’Brien and two points ahead of Annapolis Yacht Club’s Maddie Hawkins.
Justin and Mitchell Callahan out of Lauderdale Yacht Club took the two top positions, respectively, in the Gold fleet.
The first local boy was Spray Beach Yacht Club’s Ryan Ehnot, who placed 21st overall out of the blue division with 54 points. SBYC’s Lauren Ehnot was the third local sailor, placing 26th overall out of the red division with 62 points. Surf City Yacht Club’s Declan Botwinick, who raced out of the red division, was the fourth local and 29th overall with 69 points. SCYC’s Everett Botwinick, sailing in the blue division, was not far behind in the 34th overall spot with 80 points.
In the Silver fleet, Brant Beach Yacht Club’s Charlie Weinstein was first in the blue division and overall with seven points, after he took the top positions during the second and third races and placed second and third in two of the other three races contested.
Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club’s Drew D’Orsi was first in the white division and sixth overall with 21 points, placing as high as second in the third race. LEHYC’s Bella Cremer was the first girl in the white division and ninth overall with 34 points, finishing as high as seventh in both the first and second races.
The next two locals in the Silver fleet were LEHYC’s Dillon Millar, who placed 12th overall with 39 points, and Spray Beach Yacht Club’s Connor McHugh, who was 13th overall with 40 points. —D.B.
