Homeowner Reportedly Drowns in Ocean Off Beach Haven Park
On Sunday, Sept. 18, at 7:15 p.m., the Long Beach Township Police Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Ocean County Sheriff's Department CSI responded to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin following a reported drowning off 100th Street in the Beach Haven Park section of the township.
According to Al Della Fave, public affairs director at the Office of the Ocean County Prosecutor, the officials learned the incident had occurred at 5:39 p.m., “when an unidentified surfer called 911 after pulling James Bishop out of the ocean.” Bishop, 73, went down to the beach in the vicinity of 100th Street at approximately 4:30 p.m.
“His wife was home at the time of the incident, waiting for him to return for dinner,” Della Fave reported. Bishop and his wife, of Germantown, Pa., maintain a summer residence in Beach Haven Park.
Bishop was transported from the beach to SOMC and pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m. The deceased “was observed in emergency room 11 and no outward trauma was observed,” said Della Fave.
The investigation continues pending a post mortem examination. —J.K.-H.
