Hunter’s Fatal Shooting Under Investigation
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office major crimes unit is investigating the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old Barnegat man out hunting Saturday morning in Berkeley Township.
Al Della Fave, prosecutor’s office spokesman, said that on Jan. 28 at 8:46 a.m., Berkeley Township police were dispatched to the wooded area of 100 Locker St. following a 911 call stating a male had been shot while hunting.
Della Fave said Berkeley police and MONOC Unit 712 responded. Richard Peirera was pronounced dead at scene shortly after 9 a.m. via telemetry at 9:08 a.m by Dr. Veronica Juarez from Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The deceased was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River.
The area was immediately secured and Det. Matthew Scutti and Det. Laudicina of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department processed the scene. The shotgun used in the shooting has been secured with the sheriff’s department.
Della Fave said a preliminary investigation found the victim, his father and two friends were out hunting deer. One of the victim’s friends, a 41-year-old male from Forked River, discharged his shotgun while hunting, striking Peirera and killing him. After hearing the gunshot the victim’s father immediately attempted to render aid while 911 was called. The names of the father and the shooter have not yet been released. —E.E..
