Long Beach Township Mayor Joseph Mancini swore in new police captain Kevin Mahon, with Mahon’s wife, Maureen, by his side, during Monday’s board of commissioners meeting. Mahon has been with the township police department for 22½ years, rising through the ranks to sergeant, then lieutenant, and now captain.

“Nobody is more deserving of this appointment than Kevin,” said Mancini.

“He’s one of the most well-respected of our officers,” remarked Chief Tony Deely, who noted Mahon’s commitment, hard work and intelligence.

Mahon thanked the governing body for its support of the police department, and acknowledged both Deely and former chief Michael Bradley, who recently retired from the position. “Without him, I wouldn’t be here,” Mahon said of Bradley, “and I owe him the world.”

Also during the meeting, Commissioner Joseph Lattanzi announced that the LBI Health Department is now offering flu shots.

He also pointed out that the shuttle buses – which will likely surpass 80,000 riders this year – will run during the kite festival on the Island this coming weekend.

The next board of commissioners meeting is scheduled for Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. —J.K.-H.
