Message in a Bottle Found in Harvey Cedars
A message in a bottle that may be from an Englander turned up in Harvey Cedars last Saturday.
The Jan. 24 nor’easter had done a number on the dunes, where North Beach resident Vince Stango was taking the family dogs for their daily beach walk when he noticed the bottle. Naturally he brought it home and peered through the glass to read the note inside, written on cruise ship stationery: “Found the bottle? Read this note? I’m Stuart. If you wish, call or email at (his phone numbers) or (his U.K. Yahoo account). Speak or mail soon!! England Stuart.”
Attempts to reach Stuart for his confirmation and input, however, have been thus far unsuccessful, so all the Stango family has are questions. The bottle’s age and origin are unknown; likely if it did come from “across the pond” it took a roundabout route, traveling clockwise in an ocean current before being deposited on LBI.
“We have found a lot of treasures on our beach (including an arrowhead), but never one quite like this,” Vince’s daughter Annmarie said. “We were extremely excited by this rare occurrence on our little island.”
As of Monday the Stangos had emailed and called the supposed sender but hadn’t heard back. “We are really hoping to connect with him,” Annmarie said.
Until then, the mystery remains unsolved, and the bottle makes a nice decoration for the mantel. —V.F.
