HOME BASE: North Jersey (relocated from Scranton, Pa.)
STYLE: Creative covers and textured, flavorful originals that might be described as rock-Americana, with a jam band, bluegrass-y, reggae sensibility, influenced by the “rustic tones and imagery” of Pennsylvania’s coal-mining region. The playing might be fast and intricate to get feet stomping, or ballad-like to move a listener to tears.
LINEUP: Michael Mizwinski, guitar and vocals; Wayne Scheller, keys; A.J. Jump, drums. The trio instrumentation is going to be an interesting one, Mizwinski remarked. Agreed – in more intimate settings such as Tuckers and daddy O, well-controlled percussion is a beautiful thing. For the five-piece gig in September, the band is joined by Andy Huenerberg on bass and Bunker Strout on strings (guitar, banjo, mandolin).
FUN FACT: Mizwinski is an award-winning, acoustic singer-songwriter who has opened for The Wallflowers, Blues Traveler, Derek Trucks, Shawn Colvin, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Lyle Lovett and America.
WORD UP: Moving away from the full band dynamic and into his own as a solo and small-project artist has opened new doors to wider audiences, he explained, which has been an exciting change of pace. “I’m starting to embark on some new adventures, conquering the greater NYC area,” he said.
FEEDBACK: Reviewer Christopher Halleron of HMag online, out of Hoboken, said Mizwinski “plays with astonishing tenacity and dazzling skill,” going so far as to say if your jaw doesn’t drop, it might be wired shut.
TWO’S TAKE: An indie vibe with a mainstream face and a warm, sparkling personality – in other words, totally crush-worthy.
