Oskar Huber Furniture and Design Celebrates 85 Years of Excellence
Few businesses flourish for more than 85 years and span three generations of a family known throughout the area for personalized sales and services. Oskar Huber Furniture and Design is conveniently located at the gateway to Long Beach Island in the landmark building that has been improved upon by generations of the Huber family.
“My grandfather started the business in 1927, so we’re 85 years old and are very proud of our reputation,” Bob Huber said. “We are continuing to expand our customer base by reaching out to invite customers from all mainland communities to see the values we have to offer.”
Specializing in designing and installing beautiful and durable furnishings, this team of experts continues to serve mainland and Island communities from their landmark store on the Island. Oskar Huber Sr. found his success specializing in better quality furniture at what he termed the “fairest prices every day.” Bob Huber, today’s co-president (along with his brother Ron), said, “This is precisely the tradition of excellence that remains at the forefront of our philosophy. As a third generation, family-owned and operated business, our commitment to our employees, customers and our community remains paramount.”
Today, Oskar Huber Furniture and Design is known by customers and interior designers as the “idea store.”
“We offer complimentary, professional design consultations that our customers can experience in their home, in one of our stores or have the ability to view the designer’s portfolio,” Bob Huber said, “Since we combine professional design and top quality manufacturers, we feel we’re the premier home furnishings and design center for all of Southern Ocean County.”
Simply stated, this is a center whose purpose is to offer home furnishings and services that create a beautiful and comfortable home for each client and customer. The way Huber sees it, “As a family business, we are committed to creating long-term relationships with our customers and employees by providing an outstanding environment in which to shop and work.”
Huber says there are many consumers who want higher-end furniture and custom-ordered merchandise. The Ship Bottom store, which opened in 1962, also offers designers and decorators who make free house calls and consultations. Not only does it sell furniture with a durable, “beachy and casual” look, it also helps homeowners desiring high-end furnishings and accessories for their seashore “castles,” said Huber, who maintains a family home in the Beach Haven Gardens section of Long Beach Township.
In addition, the store has built relationships with other local businesses, such as Dave’s Appliance Center and Reynolds Landscaping. Brothers Don and Glenn Huber make up the remaining team members of four brothers and their families.
“Our niche is better quality products, custom ordered so they can get it exactly the way they want it for their home – and design services, as well,” Huber explained.
Among the firm’s featured lines are Stressless by Ekornes, Lexington, Rowe and Sealy, along with Stearns & Foster, Stanley and Braxton Culler.
Huber recalls his dad buying the former lumber company building as a young man in his twenties. The building was up for sale at auction in 1962. “I was a kid in a bathing suit sitting on the counter. He raised his hand and bought the building. The first thing my father asked was, ‘Where’s the phone? I have to call the bank.’”
The family patriarch, Oskar Huber Sr., opened his first furniture store in Northeast Philadelphia in 1927. He had already become an expert in distinguishing the qualities of better furniture by making his own. His son, Oskar Huber Jr., was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and a pilot before taking over operation of the business. Throughout the years, the family has made contributions to more than 145 charitable organizations, and earned a Humanitarian Award in 1991 by the Home Furnishings Association of the Delaware Valley.
“A lot of our staff people have been with us for many years, seeing our customers grow and have youngsters of their own,” Huber said with a smile. “That’s really encouraging to us as a family, knowing that there are people here on our team who have quality experience. And for our customers, they’ll be served by experts that will help them every step of the way. You will have an experienced Huber with you throughout your relationship with us.”
The furniture lines are described as middle-to-upper-middle quality, providing much better value than many of the seemingly cheaper, “big box” stores that come and go. “It’s better merchandise, and we’ll special-order for you,” Huber said. “Also, we’ll do house calls. We’ll send a decorator to your home to help you make decisions to make sure it’s the way you want.”
The store also has a wide selection of occasional pieces and decor, as well as entry-level-priced items suitable for rental units.
In another area, customers can also find durable outdoor furniture for the patio or deck. “These are among the many items that are equally suited for our mainland customers and our Island clients,” Huber continued. “This is outdoor furniture that can stand the weather; you don’t have to bring it indoors.”
