Pose School Options

Oct 19, 2016

To the Editor:

Regarding the future of the two schools in the Long Beach Island Consolidated School District, while we have to go to referendum no matter what, the questions on the ballot can be adjusted. Why not have options presented?

One question would approve the sale of the LBI Grade School, fund a major addition to the Ethel Jacobsen School and end with a single site. Question 2 should be to retrofit and repair both schools, maintain a valuable property and minimize the tax impact to all the taxpayers.

This issue was presented this week to the Barnegat Light Council. Throughout the discussion it was evident that most residents have no idea what the concerns are, what the values are and how the school board could have arrived at this juncture. And most importantly, the discussion has been far removed from what is best for the students now and in the future, at least as far as the public knows.

I urge residents of LBI to come to the board meetings and voice their opinion. Ask questions. Vote in November for a change in direction and accountability.
