Rams Get Early Big Win Against Toms River North

Apr 14, 2017

The Southern Regional varsity baseball team’s goal of improving on last year’s 7-12 record has taken  major strides with a 5-3 road victory April 10 against Toms River North.

“They were the pre-season favorite in our division (Shore Conference A-South),” said head coach Keith Cocuzza. “We were 6-8 in conference play last year, so this was a big step for us.”

Senior shortstop Pat Barrett hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie. Senior Zach Fillmore went the distance for the win. Fillmore gave up two earned runs and nine hits and struck out three batters.

As of the Toms River North game, the Rams had a 2-1 record. Their other win was a 5-4 victory at home against Brick Memorial. The Rams’ lone loss came at Central Regional, 4-2.

Cocuzza said Britton will be anchoring what he said is a strong pitching staff, which also includes senior Nick Simone (who got the win in relief against Brick), junior Colin Flood and Barrett, when he’s not playing shortstop. Flood also plays the outfield.

The head coach said the Rams are a senior-laden team, featuring third baseman/outfielder Zach Oddo, catcher Nolan Watson, second-baseman Joey Robertson, infielder Danny Wright and outfielders Noah Brown, Vaughn Walker, Connor Ciliberto and Garrett Lange. Also in the mix is junior outfielder Marcos Matias.

“I think we’re going to be strong defensively,” said Cocuzza. “We’ve looked really good in the field so far. We have a lot of experience playing together, so that should help us a lot this season.”

Cocuzza said he is also looking to get contributions from various newcomers, including senior first-basemen Nick Pereira and Brady Clark, junior first-baseman Matt Tancredi, junior third-baseman Mike Liantonio, junior infielder Austin Pharo, junior outfielder Joe Colonna and junior shortstop Nick Downey.

Upcoming home games are Cedar Creek on Monday, April 17, and Tuesday, April 18, against Brick Township. The first pitch for both games is at 4 p.m.
