Readers Can Join in Adventures along the Jersey Shore
“Adventures steeped in legend, folklore, mystery and suspense” unfold in the book Adventures along the Jersey Shore, describe its authors. The volume, combining six original stories with a new novella, Storm Warnings, is available in stores and online.
Authors Dave Hart and John Calu will be at the Long Beach Island branch of the Ocean County Library on Monday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. for a book discussion and signing. The public is welcome to the free presentation.
“In our Adventures along the Jersey Shore we attempt to reach readers of all ages through youthful memories of endless summers filled with sandy beaches, never-ending waves and the promise of new love on warm, moonlit nights,” the authors summarize.
But elements of suspense, based on area history, keep the pages turning.
In the adventure series, the characters “are on a mission to explore the forgotten history and natural phenomena behind the Garden State’s most baffling events,” add the authors.
The chapter names illustrate the intrigue: “The Treasure of Tucker’s Island,” “Mystery of the Jersey Devil,” “Secret of the Painted Rock,” “The Lost Mission of Captain Carranza,” “Riddle in the Sand,” “Spirits of Cedar Bridge” and the final Storm Warnings, set as Superstorm Sandy is barreling toward Long Beach Island.
“Our goal is to educate as well as entertain,” said Hart of the book set on Long Beach Island and in the surrounding shore area as well as the Pine Barrens. “All the history and factual information provided is meticulously researched. We have personally visited all the places we write about.
“We also care very much about the ecology. We even engaged the services of a friend who is a Sioux shaman to perform a water ceremony at the Painted Rock so that the rock would divulge its long-kept secrets to us.”
“The series kicks off with The Treasure of Tucker’s Island. Siblings Kelly and Geoffrey Martin are spending their school vacation on Long Beach Island, bunking above their aunt’s gift shop in Ship Bottom and working traditional summer jobs – lifeguarding in Kelly’s case, busing tables in Geoffrey’s,” a book synopsis introduces.
“When Kelly stumbles upon a priceless pendant that’s washed up on the shore, the Martins and their new friend Danny Windsor find themselves swept up in tales of Atlantic pirates and their ruthless terrestrial brethren, the ‘Mooncussers.’ A search for ancient treasure leads the teens not only to danger, but to the surprising untold story behind South Jersey’s lost island.”
The book is not the first for the duo. Hart is an award-winning songwriter, researcher and historian. The descendant of a New Jersey signer of the Declaration of Independence is a trustee for the Trenton Historical Society and a member of the Ewing Township Historic Preservation Society.
Calu is the author of a collection of humorous essays titled A Yankee Jazz Singer in Cuzco. Hart and Calu have enjoyed a productive collaboration as novelists since 2003. Their historical novel Trenton was published by Plexus Publishing Inc. in 2010.
