Safety Symposium to Aid Disabled on March 19

Mar 14, 2016

March is Disability Awareness Month, and at the Little Egg Harbor branch of the Ocean County Library, a safety symposium for autism and other disabilities will be held on Saturday, March 19, at 10 a.m.

Branch manager Kelly Ann Pennell said the event will feature several workshops and speakers. It is geared to teachers, parents and caregivers. Teachers can receive continuing education credits.

Pennell said the program is being coordinated by Parents of Autistic Children.

“POAC provides many education and training programs, as well as research into causes and prevention of autism and recreational opportunities,” she said.

Some of the topics covered include GPS tracking device demonstrations, strategies for reducing risks from sexual predators, home safety tips, hygiene, ways to empower individuals to keep themselves safe and teaching strategies for all levels of functioning.

Pennell said interested persons would have to register by logging onto poac.net. For more information, call the branch at 609-294-1197. —E.E.
