Success in volleyball runs deep in the Southern Regional School District. Between the high school’s girls and boys teams, a bunch of state championship trophies have been earned during the past 12 years. But the progression toward state title hardware begins within the walls of the middle school across the street.

And much like head coach Eric Maxwell has built a powerhouse on one side, Cathy Maxwell has developed a very strong program on the other. On Oct. 8, the Southern Regional Middle School girls team showed its strength, capturing the third annual Middle School Tournament title with a convincing, 25-7 win over Pinelands “A” in the final.

Southern – currently 9-0 in the Ocean County Middle School League – cruised to an 8-0 record during pool play with victories over Pinelands (25-15, 25-11), Toms River South (25-13, 25-22), defending tourney champs Old Bridge “Salk” (25-16, 25-17) and Old Bridge “Sandburg” (25-7, 25-16).

During the tournament, the host team was powered by the play of Stephanie Soares, Emma Gildea, Sage Dougherty, Adrianna Conforti, Rachel Pharo, Reginna Ingling, Corrine Spina, Erin Allegre and Madison Gellis.

What’s more, Southern Middle School’s “A” team currently is in the midst of a 32-match winning streak dating back to September 2014. — D.B.
