Southern Regional Girls Tennis Squad Off to a 6-0 Start
Since opening up its season on Sept. 6, the Southern Regional girls tennis team had won six straight matches leading up to what was supposed to be the Rams’ toughest contest so far. Unfortunately, their Shore Conference Class A South clash with Toms River North was rained out on Sept. 19.
But forget that for the moment. The Rams are 6-0 with five shutouts. In fact, those five goose eggs occurred during the first five contests. But in their last match, against Toms River South, things were tight.
In 3-2 decision, the Rams were led by first singles player Kristina Pineno, who ousted Brooke Adams in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1; third singles player Sophia Mastandrea, who scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Annabella Loscrudato; and the first doubles tandem of Erica Cordero and Christina D’Amodio, who won, 6-1, 6-4, against Emily Polhemus and Brianna Weltner.
Heading into the match with the Indians, only one of the Rams’ doubles teams had lost a set, and Pineno hadn’t even lost a game, running off five straight 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Against Central Regional on Sept. 14, Olivia Fulton won, 6-2, 6-0, at second singles, while Mastandra won by forfeit, and the team of Cordero-D’Amodio won, 6-2, 6-3, while the duo of Julia Drazin and Jamie Tapia scored a 6-4, 6-0 victory at second doubles.
On Sept. 13, the Rams routed Jackson Liberty, as Fulton and Mastandrea swept the singles matches with 6-0, 6-0 wins; Cordero and D’Amodio cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win; and Drazin and Rose Morizzo scored a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
During a shutout win over Brick Memorial on Sept. 12, Fulton won her second singles contest, 6-1, 6-1, and Mastandrea won at third singles, 6-0, 6-0. Both doubles teams won in straight sets as well – Cordero and D’Amodio, 6-0, 6-0, at first, and Drazin and Tapia, 6-1, 6-2, at second.
Southern’s next big match comes up on Friday, Sept. 23, against Jackson Memorial (4-1). The Jaguars recently defeated Toms River North, 3-2, and also remain undefeated in the division. —D.B.
