Urgent Care Now’s Lunch & Learn Program Grows, Relocates to Bay Avenue Community Center

Apr 19, 2017

For more than a year, Urgent Care Now in Manahawkin has provided free and informative monthly “Lunch & Learn” events for the Southern Ocean County community. Focusing on a different topic on the first Friday of each month, the Lunch & Learn discussions are led by physicians, nurse practitioners and RNs, exploring topics such as antibiotic overuse and resistance, allergic reactions, chest pain and its many causes, concussions, opiate abuse, influenza and lung diseases. During summer the topics have been jellyfish stings and other things, Lyme disease, sun exposure, ticks, spiders and other things that bite.

Originally held at Stockton’s Instructional Site in Manahawkin, the program was moved to accommodate the talks’ popularity. As of March, the events are now being held across the street from Urgent Care Now, at Stafford Township’s Bay Avenue Community Center. Over 70 were in attendance last month for the lecture titled “Take a Deep Breath” on lung issues and COPD. March’s topic was “Itching, Sneezing and Wheezing.” Upcoming topics include injuries while working around the house and elder abuse.

On May 5, from noon to 1, catch "Watch Your Step! Preventing Slips, Falls and Injuries Around the House." Presenting is Nurse Practitioner Ellyn Hill. The event is free but registration is required. Call 609-978-0242, option 4.

UCN plans to expand the program to its other Ocean County locations, in Lanoka Harbor and Toms River, with a fourth location opening this summer in Little Egg Harbor.

Organized and overseen by Urgent Care Now Medical Director John Kulin, the event is offered as a way of giving back to the community and providing educational health-related information.

Kulin was a hospital ER medical director for over 10 years. He started UCN in 2005 because he wanted to provide quality care and put the patients’ needs first. UCN’s slogan is “The Care You Need, When You Need It Most” – its motto, “Believe in Something Better.”  —V.F.
