To the Editor:
Imagine my surprise Sunday evening about 6 p.m. while driving south on the parkway not far from the Waretown exit when busting from the tree line a group of at least four or more mud-coated off-road vehicles emerged. Afraid of being caught, the cowards darted south along the parkway and again into the pines to do more damage to the fragile ecosystem. Clearly marked “No Trespassing” signs lined the area.
These idiots have no respect for the environment. I am sure there are areas where this type of destructive behavior is allowed, say a toxic waste site, but to purposely and knowingly go into an area to cause destruction and irreversible damage is a crime. New Jersey has so few unspoiled places left. Existing wildlife and plant ecosystems that are damaged never fully recover. This type of behavior is totally unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
I would urge all concerned citizens or anyone who cares about the future of the Pine Barrens to report these criminals to the state environmental protection department when spotted. Believe it or not, we have a group of park rangers who do patrol parts of the Pine Barrens, but they are spread pretty thin.
I would also write your congressmen and insist on steeper fines and jail time for these jerks. Get the license plate, vehicle description, time and day and location and any other information to the proper authorities so that we can stop this type of wanton destruction of one of New Jersey’s valuable resources: the Pine Barrens.
