Zonta Club Busy With Charitable Activities

Recently Raised Funds for Coastal Volunteers in Medicine, Among Others
May 17, 2017

The Zonta Club of Southern Ocean County is active in its charitable work as a local chapter of Zonta International, a nonprofit service organization that has more than 30,000 members in 66 countries whose mission is to improve the lives of women globally.

The Zonta Club of SOC supports local charities, women’s shelters, safe houses, transitional housing for women and several nonprofits by organizing fundraising events throughout the year.

Recently, Zonta sponsored a spaghetti dinner that raised over $1,300 for Coastal Volunteers in Medicine, an organization that provides free medical care to residents who do not have health insurance.

The dinner was held at the Masonic Lodge in Tuckerton in April. Over 130 people attended the dinner.

Another fundraising event is a monthly Bunco group held at John & Sonia’s Luncheonette on Radio Road in Little Egg Harbor on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. The cost is $15, and free refreshments are provided.

The Zonta Club of SOC also directly supports women in need through other projects, like compiling “first night” kits for women entering women’s safe houses in Ocean County.

The kits contain much-needed personal care items such as toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and soap.

Zonta members also provide “cuddle kits” for children of any age who reside with their mothers in these shelters. Cuddle kits contain homemade blankets (crocheted or knitted by several club members), books, stuffed animals for the younger children, plus hats and gloves during the winter months.

Christmas gift bags for children were also donated to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission in December.

The Zonta Club collects new articles of women’s clothing for local hospitals to give to victims of rape, whose own clothing is typically collected as evidence during the hospital evaluation.

The Zonta Club of SOC is actively seeking members who are passionate about women’s issues. If you are interested in joining, the club meets at John & Sonia’s in Little Egg Harbor on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. Call club President Debbie Casale at 609-296-8768 for more information.  —M.S.
