May 09, 2018

With the summer running season right around the corner, now’s a great time to get in a solid 5K while helping to support a local volunteer fire department. On Saturday, May 19, runners and walkers can get their legs moving in the sixth annual Get LBI Running 5K – a fundraiser to benefit the Surf City Volunteer Fire Co. and EMS.

Started in May 2013, about seven months following Superstorm Sandy, the race has raised more than $30,000 and has had more than 1,200 participants. Last year’s race drew 264 competitors and was easily won by Woodbury’s Dan Theleen in 16:33. Summit’s William Lusty (19:30) was second and Chris Sotiro (19:45) was third, while Manahawkin resident Karen Ritchie took the top spot for the women at 21:39.

Beginning at 9 a.m. at the firehouse on Eighth Street and Long Beach Boulevard, the entire course is run within the borough’s boundaries. Families are encouraged to participate.

Registration ends Wednesday, May 16, and the cost is $35 per competitor. Race-day check-in ends at 8:30 a.m. Anybody with questions can email To register, visit —D.B.
