The Bengal Theatre Company of Barnegat High School will perform “A Christmas Carol” at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6, 7 and 8 and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 9 in the Bengal Theatre.

Tickets are $5 and may be reserved at bengaltheatre.com or purchased at the door.

The Charles Dickens novella was published in 1843. Some 46 film adaptations followed, starting as early as 1908. The Bengal Theatre Company, however, will perform a traditional version of the Christmas classic, which makes sense since “A Christmas Carol” is a Barnegat High School tradition.

When the high school opened in 2004 “A Christmas Carol” was the first show presented in the Bengal Theatre. Indeed, it was the only fall/winter show produced at Barnegat High School for its first three years. Since then it has been performed at least every four years, giving every student who goes through the school a chance to perform in the show before they graduate.

The students taking advantage of that opportunity this year include Geoffrey Bowen as Ebenezer Scrooge, who will be visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve – Peter Jennings as Jacob Marley, Jill Bopp as The Spirit of Christmas Past, Juliana Shugar as The Spirit of Christmas Present and Zac Palmisano as The Spirit of Christmas Future.

One of the show’s most memorable scenes takes place at the humble abode of the Cratchit family. Jacob Cook will play Bob Cratchit, Janeiry Cruz will play his wife and Jude Russo will take the role of Tiny Tim. The family is rounded out by Ethan Applegate as Peter, Franchesca Lamberty as Belinda and Sofia Faraldi as Martha.

Other featured characters include Scrooge’s nephew Fred (Christopher Wambach), his wife (Emilie Guinan), Topper (Tommy Hare), Mr. Fezziwig (Jordan Burton), Mrs. Fezziwig (Fenix Applegate) and two charitable workers (Alexa Daley and Zac Palmisano). Then there is Jasmine Brown as Fan, Scrooge’s sister, Mark Ford as a headmaster, Joshua Bowen as the child Scrooge, Miracle Modica as young Scrooge, Marielle Sansig as Belle, Anthony Lundy as Bell’s husband, Brianna Finkle as Belle’s daughter, Lillian Applegate as Belle’s grandchild, J. Applegate and Nicholas Sellers at Want and Ignorance, Kade Sekerzicky as Old Joe, Dylan Fecher as Dick Wilkins and Isaias Badilla as the fiddler.

If Dickens didn’t create enough characters, as was his wont, the director of the Barnegat show, Kerry Bollenbach, added a chorus of narrators who keep the show moving, including Savannah Bennett, Abby Bopp, Liz Critelli, Chase Lomboy, Megan Robichaud and Allie Truax.  —R.M.
