For the second time in two months, an expensive piece of jewelry has been found in Beach Haven, and in both instances, the item was returned to its owner.

It was in late September when Maritza LaCoco was staying at the Beach Club on Pearl Street with other family members. At one point when on the beach, she placed her diamond engagement ring and wedding band in a small purse. But then as she and her husband, Joshua, were getting ready to go back home to Cherry Hill, she realized the engagement ring was missing.

“I was pregnant at the time and was thinking about a lot of things, and the ring slipped my mind,” she said. “I thought it was possible that it could have been dropped on the beach.”

Her mother-in-law, Karen LaCoco, said the family filed a report with the police department.

Last Saturday, a 7-year-old boy, Luca Trotta, was on the beach with his family getting their pictures taken when something caught his eye. That sparkle he saw turned out to be LaCoco’s ring, a 1.25-carat  piece she said is worth $14,000.

“Luca knew what he had to do, and that was turn it in to the Beach Haven Police Department,” the department said on its Facebook page. “After a positve ID, the owner was beyond ectstatic with the news and couldn’t thank Luca enough. The Beach Haven Police Department would like to thank Luca for going out of his way to do the right thing.”

“It was good that we filed the report or we probably never would have gotten the ring back,” said Karen LaCoco. “This was a miracle. The engagement ring was worth a lot more than the wedding band.”

In early September, Josh Peck was using a metal detector when he found a gold wedding band on the beach off Liberty Street. He was able to quickly return it to its owner because a woman who had asked him if he found anything turned out to be the mother of the daughter who had lost the ring back in May.  —E.E.
