Adult Education Classes Focus on Jewish Issues

Jan 17, 2018

An adult education class series offered by Congregation Sha’arey Ha-Yam will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 23, at p.m. with a program on the Holocaust. The “Jewish Literacy” classes are held at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, where the reform congregation (whose name means “Gates of the Sea”) holds Friday evening Shabbat services twice a month.

Rabbi Joshua Goldstein said the classes are geared for those who want to add to their Jewish knowledge, those who want to understand basic Jewish ideas, and people interested in converting to Judaism.

“We started last fall, and while most of the people were from the congregation, we welcome people of all faiths who are interested in learning about what Judaism stands for,” he said.

All classes are held on Tuesdays and run from 1 to 2 p.m. Also scheduled are “Jewish Texts: Bible, Haggadah and Siddur,” Feb. 6; “Jewish Ethics and Basic Beliefs,” Feb. 20; “Jewish Holidays,” March 6; “Life Cycle: From Cradle to Grave,” March 20; and “Synagogues and Prayers,” April 6.
