All Aboard for Holiday Train Rides in New Gretna

Dec 20, 2017

Take the Tuckerton Railroad through the woods of New Gretna Park for the Jersey Live Steam Christmas Light Festival, running every Saturday night through December featuring 30,000 Christmas lights and some scenes of Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Riders get laser-cut glasses to wear that make the Christmas lights look like hundreds of elves, Santas, snowflakes, reindeers and more. Rides are free with a handstamp that allows multiple turns.

The park and its railroad were built and manned by volunteers and supported by donations. Local fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders helped decorate the park as volunteers. A new observation deck allows participants to look over the entire park.

Light displays are every Saturday through December from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and every night between Christmas and New Year’s except Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Trains will operate Saturday and Sundays through the Christmas displays.

The Tuckerton Railroad is located at 11 Oak Ave. off Route 9 in Bass River Township.  —P.J.
