All Local Football Teams Slated for Regional-Crossover Games This Week

Nov 08, 2017

The Southern Regional football team scored a 24-13 win over Shore Conference Class A South division rival Toms River South in its last regular-season game on Nov. 3, but the victory wasn’t enough to secure an NJSIAA South Jersey Group V playoff spot. Instead, the team will play its season finale in one of the dozens of regional-crossover contests this week.

Against the Indians, who led, 13-12, at halftime, Southern (3-6) grabbed the lead in the third quarter when Joe Guglielmo ran the ball in from 7 yards away, then solidified the victory with a 6-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. After a 2-yard TD burst by Joe Miele cut South’s initial 7-0 lead to a point early in the second quarter, the Indians went back up by seven with another score, before Guglielmo scored on a 24-yard run to make it a one-point game at the half.

For the game, Guglielmo ran the ball 14 times for 177 yards, while Miele carried 18 times for 136 yards. Defensively, Miele led the way with nine tackles, while Dupreme Holland made seven tackles and intercepted a pass.

To finish the season, the Rams will travel south to Atlantic City for a 6 p.m. contest on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Also on Nov. 3, Barnegat sought to make the South Jersey Group II playoffs, but after falling behind Point Pleasant Borough, 14-6, in the first quarter, the Bengals (4-4) only mustered another touchdown in the second quarter as the Panthers added touchdowns in both the second and third quarters for a 28-12 victory.

After Borough took a 7-0 lead, the Bengals cut the deficit to one when Brian Finucan hit Sean Morris on a 35-yard touchdown pass. The Panthers scored twice more before Barnegat’s Charlie Cotton ran the ball into the end zone from a yard out, making it 21-12 at the half. Borough (9-0) used its defense to keep Barnegat scoreless in the second half.

The Bengals will play their next contest on the road – a regional-crossover against Overbrook on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. – before completing the season in their annual Thanksgiving game against nearby rival Pinelands Regional on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 6:30 p.m.

The Wildcats (2-6) also will play in a regional crossover game this week, taking on Oakcrest at home on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., after they missed out on a spot in the South Jersey Group III playoffs following a 37-7 loss to Lakewood on Nov. 4. Pinelands’ Zack Ackerman, who rushed for 60 yards, scored on a 15-yard run for the Wildcats’ only touchdown.
