Amy Bruno a Standout on Georgian Court V-Ball Squad

Jan 31, 2018

At Barnegat High School, Amy Bruno was one of the top performers on the girls varsity volleyball team, and she has continued to excel as an outside hitter and middle blocker for Georgian Court University in Lakewood. Late last year, Bruno earned first-team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference CACC as a middle blocker, as well as a second-team designation on the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association All-Region squad. She was second on the Lions in kills with 226 and had a .323 hitting percentage, which was second in the CACC. Defensively, she led the conference with 116 blocks and a 1.04 blocks-per-set average, good for third in the conference.

As a freshman, the 5-foot-10-inch Bruno showed promise with 153 kills and 66 blocks.

“The biggest difference I found going from high school to college was the intensity,” she said. “And I’m also going up against players who were the best on their high school teams, so it has been quite a challenge.”

The former Bengal thanks her high school coach, Karla Jennings, for preparing her for the next level.

“She was a great teacher and motivator,” said Bruno. “She was very encouraging and also stressed the importance of teamwork.”

At Barnegat, Bruno was not a full-fledged varsity player until her junior year. She started in 2015 and 2016 and made B-South All-Conference both years.

“I was recruited by various colleges, but I chose Georgian Court because they really made me feel welcome,” she said. “They cared about me as a person, not just for being an athlete.”

Bruno said she was also comfortable with the university’s commitment to community service and compassion.

“Winning an extremely important game doesn’t even feel the way it feels from helping someone,” she said.. “It’s the best feeling in the world.”
