Another Sandy Contractor Prosecuted for Theft

Jun 27, 2018

Superstorm Sandy roared ashore on Oct. 29, 2012, almost six years ago, but the ramifications of that fateful storm are still being felt by the victims as some cases of fraudulent contractors are making their way through the courts.

Che W. Smith, 47, of Berne, N.Y., was convicted of third degree theft in a bench trial before Superior Court Judge James M. Blaney on Friday June 8. Smith was contracted to remediate a Tuckerton home after it was damaged from Superstorm Sandy. The investigation by Det. James Conroy of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Economic Crimes Unit, found Smith was given in excess of $76,000, but performed minimal work and misappropriated approximately $70,000. Smith is tentatively scheduled to be sentenced next month.  —P.J.
