Mar 28, 2018

Stafford Township police have had a busy month of fighting crime. On the evening of March 9, the department’s Drug Enforcement Unit, with the assistance of Ptl. Russell Dunfee, a motor vehicle stop led to the arrest of three people outside of Spirits Liquors for heroin possession and other “controlled dangerous substance” charges, including distribution for the driver, Manahawkin resident Robert Cook, 42. The two passengers, Manahawkin’s Kim Sieber, 42, and John Silva, 54, of Surf City, were charged with possession of CDS and hypodermic needles. They were all released pending a future Ocean County Superior Court appearance.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 14, police responded to both The Beauty Store in Stafford Square and the Dunkin Donuts on Washington Avenue, after several subjects attempted to make purchases using $100 counterfeit bills. Shortly after the call, police located the suspects’ vehicle, a 2003 black Honda Accord, and Ptls. Russell Griffin and Joseph Luna pulled it over on Route 72 near Route 9.  With the assistance of Det. Drew Smith, four subjects were arrested: Gregory Cooper, 19, of North Brunswick; Shaquille Hargrove, 22, of Newark; Wayne Grant, 20, of Orange; and Nygee Brown, 18, of West Orange. They were all charged with possession of a CDS; additionally, Cooper, Hargrove and Brown were charged with forgery and conspiracy. Cooper was also issued multiple motor vehicle summonses and had an active traffic warrant for his arrest issued by the Newark Municipal Court. He was later released on his own recognizance. Subsequently, all four subjects were released with court appearances to be scheduled by Ocean County Superior Court.

On the afternoon of Saturday, March 17, police arrested Brittney Johnson, 31, of Manahawkin, for stealing a white 2002 Hyundai Elantra in the area of Leeward Road and Gaff Road from the Ocean Acres section of Stafford Township. The car was stolen from the victim’s residence when it was left running and unlocked in a driveway.

Ptl. Brian Fenlon located and pulled over the Elantra in the area of New Washington Avenue. Ptl. Anthony Vincent was the arresting officer.

Johnson is also suspected of stealing a black 2014 Honda Accord in the area of Privateer Road in Ocean Acres on Thursday, March 15. It was recovered the following day in a wooded area off Hull Road, also in Ocean Acres. Furthermore, Johnson allegedly stole and used one of the victims’ credit cards, and stole a small amount of cash from each vehicle.

Johnson was charged with two counts of third-degree theft of movable property; one disorderly persons offense; third-degree burglary; and theft by deception. She is currently lodged in Ocean County Jail.

As always, the public is reminded criminal charges are merely accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.  —V.F.
