With the help of various law enforcement agencies, Barnegat Township police have made two arrests in connection with a Lexington Boulevard shooting during the evening of May 7.

Police Chief Keith Germain said after an intensive investigation by the Barnegat Police Crime Reduction Unit and agency detectives, warrants were issued on May 9 for Rashon Peten, 29, of Asbury Park, and Raymond McCullers Jr., 25, of Lakewood.

Peten was located in Asbury Park and McCullers was found in Lakewood, and both were arrested on May 9. They were both charged with second degree aggravated assault, second degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.

Barnegat police were assisted in the search for the subjects by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Special Operations Group. Both subjects were lodged in the Ocean County Jail.

Germain commended the work of the officers in quickly identifying the subjects and taking them into custody.

“This was textbook, outstanding police work that resulted in identifying and charging the subjects in less than 48 hours,” he said. “Barnegat is not the town you want to come to if you’re planning on committing violent crime. We have a 100 percent clearance rate on our small number of violent crimes for a reason – we have the best officers anywhere and we will pour every available resource into solving these cases.”

The case unfolded shortly after 7:30 p.m. on May 7, when police received a report of gunshots in the area of Lexington Boulevard. Arriving officers found no activity or victim in the area, but were able to determine that someone had been injured at the location.

Germain said that shortly thereafter, the Stafford Township Police Department advised that a 26-year-old male from Ocean Gate was located at Southern Ocean Medical Center suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg. Further investigation by Barnegat detectives confirmed that the male had been shot in the leg.

He said the victim, whose name was not released, did not wish to cooperate with authorities.E.E.
