Poetry in Motion: The annual Painted Poetry V exhibit is a unique exhibit combining 32 poems with 32 paintings at the Island branch of the Ocean County Library, Surf City, through August. Meet the artists and poets during a reception on Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Students Show: Pine Shores Art Association’s student show is now in the gallery located at 94 Stafford Ave. The gallery is open to the public on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Registration forms for activities and classes are available at the gallery or online at pineshoresartassociation.org.

“Do Your Own Pastels” sessions are held Tuesdays, 7 to 9 p.m. Ongoing portrait sessions are open to all artists for a nominal model fee on Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m., and Monday, 7 to 9 p.m. On Thursday is life drawing (undraped model) from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. is a “do your own thing” session; artists meet and create their own work. Afterward is “Artists Helping Artists” from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.; drop in with your supplies for some friendly assistance.

Early to Rise: The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences invites artists of all levels to paint the sunrise or early-morning light on the LBIF campus or the ocean beach during a special edition of  “Quick Draw.” This one-day plein air event on Friday, Aug. 10, from 6 to 9 a.m. includes a Plein Air painting competition, exhibit and sale. Participating artists can check in beginning at 5:30 a.m. Visitors are invited to observe the artists at work. Finished works will be on display and for sale at the LBIF during a reception. Light refreshments will be served. Paintings will be judged and prizes will be awarded by a guest judge. A special prize will be awarded to one artist who is enrolled in either high school or a college program. The event is open to all artists. Plein Air Workshops with landscape artist Joseph Sweeney are offered on Tuesday, Aug. 14, Wednesday, Aug. 15, and Thursday, Aug. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Instruction includes tips for painting efficiently outdoors by choosing a prime location, capturing the weather, and setting up a seascape palette. There will also be demonstrations and lectures on painting surfaces, materials, mediums, compositional drawing and color study. All media are welcome. A supply list will be available through the LBIF main office. The fee for this class is $40 for one day, $75 for two days, or $110 for three days. Students can attend one, two or three days, but it is recommended that they attend the entire workshop. There is a member discount on the class registration fees. In the gallery through Sunday, Aug. 12, is the exhibit, “Plates, Platters and Nothing Else Matters, National Juried Competition.”

Hawaiian ceramics artist Ramon Castillo gives a three-day Raku workshop Aug. 14-16 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., limited to experienced ceramics students. In addition, the public can inquire about joining the students for a potluck party on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. with live Hawaiian music. Purchase a piece of unglazed pottery, choose a glaze and for $10 watch it get fired in a raku outdoor kiln. Call for potluck suggestions.

The popular “Studio Sampler Series” is on selected Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m. throughout the summer. Visit the Painters Loft for a weekly sampling of art mediums and methods taught by skilled professionals. The fee is $40 plus $10 materials fee for each class. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, and Thursday, Aug. 9, join artist Debrah Block Krol for an “Intro to Silk Painting” workshop. The artist will guide students through the process of silk painting using resist techniques to achieve a finished silk scarf.

On Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m., join local artist Cheryl Syminink for a glass mosaic workshop during the Adults Night Out series. Students will leave with a finished, 6-inch-by-8-inch design. Syminink is a local glass and jewelry artist and the owner and founder of The C-Glass Studio. The fee for this class is $35, plus a $10 materials fee payable directly to the instructor. Member discounts apply on the registration fee.

The following Thursday, Aug.16, at 8 p.m. is the film “Loving Vincent,a unique animated film of the life and death of Vincent van Gogh made by bringing his paintings to life. Admission is $15. Member discounts apply on registration fee. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the screening begins at 8. Advance registration is recommended.

Artist Carol Freas teaches watercolor techniques every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through Aug. 29. Beginners to advanced painters are welcome. Bring a photograph to work from or draw inspiration from the beautiful view of the Barnegat Bay and marsh. The fee is $40 per day; member discounts apply. Bring supplies and a sketchbook. Advance registration is required.

Weekly Saturday Drop-In Ceramics and Fire Me Up with Dallas Koenig continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn to make ceramics or practice your skill for a fee of $35, or paint fired bisqueware for a fee of $15 plus cost of the piece.

In the Libraries: The next Art Chat at the Tuckerton branch is Thursday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. Artists bring work for friendly critique. Admission is free.

Surf the Sidewalk: Artist Cathleen Engelsen will be painting and selling her originals plus oversized reprints of her grandfather, W.C. Jones’ historic photographs at The Little Bungalow, 1700 Long Beach Boulevard in Surf City on Thursday, August 9 from 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. This is part of the Surf the Sidewalk events sponsored by the Surf City Business Cooperation. There are 40 participating members in Surf the Sidewalk and some shops will provide live music, giveaways, product demonstrations and sales.

Folklife Crafts: At the Tuckerton Seaport, basket maker Mary May leads students to complete a bicycle basket on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee is $35 for members/$40 nonmembers plus a $40 materials fee. Patricia Zackey teaches “Intro to Spinning” on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fees are $30 for members/$35 nonmembers. The Seaport is located at 120 West Main St., Tuckerton.
