Outside Works: All this summer, select artists have been painting the LBI scene outdoors in anticipation of the “Island Life: Plein Air Plus” exhibit at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, opening Sept. 8. Prizes will be awarded on Sept. 24 during the reception. The juror is Stewart White, president of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters of America.

The Weekend Studio craft is an intro to mosaics with artist Cheryl Syminink on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You will create your own 6- by 8-inch design to take home. The fee is $35 plus a $10 materials fee due the day of class. LBIF members get a 25 percent discount. Register online at

The Life Drawing class on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with Victoria Ford has been extended to Sept. 8. The fee is $20 per day.

Every Saturday, join Dallas Koenig in the ceramics studio from 1 to 5 p.m. All ages and levels of experience are welcome. To work with clay is $35 plus cost of clay; to paint available finished ceramics during a “Fire Me Up” session is $15 per object.

New Ceramics: The m.t. burton gallery, 1819 Long Beach Blvd. in Surf City, presents the wood-fired pottery of Joel Brown and Deb Heid on Saturday, Sept. 9, through Oct. 10.

PSAA: The Pine Shores Art Association’s photography show includes an exhibit by North Beach photographer Mike Lipton. A reception is planned for Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. prior to the monthly meeting, at the gallery, 94 Stafford Ave. in Manahawkin. Glenys Baulderstone will demonstrate Sumi-e Japanese ink painting after the meeting. Attendance is free.

The gallery is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.

PSAA offers a bus trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Nov. 16 to see the “Old Masters Now Exhibit” of the 1917 Johnson collection. The cost is $65 for members, $70 for nonmembers. Contact Glenys Baulderstone at or 609-294-0756 . Registration forms are available on under events.

PSAA offers low-cost workshops in collage, watercolor, gouache, tempera, oil and pastels. Glenys Baulderstone teaches Sumi-e Japanese ink painting on two Thursdays, Sept. 14 and 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bring lunch; the fee is $50 for PSAA members, $75 for nonmembers. British botanical artist Diane Sutherland Ball teachers a one-day workshop, Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for intermediate and advanced watercolor/drawing students; the fee is $60 for members, $90 for nonmembers.

Ongoing portrait sessions are open to all artists for a nominal model fee, Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m., and Monday, 7 to 9 p.m. On Thursday is life drawing (undraped model) from 7 to 9 p.m. On Tuesday, 4 to 6 p.m., is Artists Helping Artists; drop in with your supplies for some friendly assistance. Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. is “do your own thing”; artists meet and create their own work.

Art Chat: Artists meet at 10:15 a.m. the first and third Thursdays of each month at the Tuckerton Seaport Hunting Shanty for encouragement, news and support. Bring old or new works for discussion, and your coffee and treats. All are welcome.

Mark the Calendar: The Makers Fest of over 150 vendors of arts, crafts, food, etc. is on Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Manahawkin Lake in Stafford. Music, yoga and a beer garden round out the fest. —P.J.
