On Sunday, July 22, local students benefited from a backpack giveaway at the TCC store in Ship Bottom. As part of a nationwide backpack giveaway sponsored by TCC (the nation’s largest Verizon authorized retailer) and Verizon Wireless stores, the Ship Bottom location received 220 backpacks filled with school supplies to give out to children who came to the event.

The “School Rocks Backpack Giveaway” began in 2013 and has resulted in over 752,000 donated bags of supplies since. The purpose of the event is “to ensure children are well prepared for the start of the school year” while alleviating the cost burden on parents. Over 1,200 TCC and Verizon Wireless stores participated in this year’s giveaway.

The backpack giveaway donated backpacks from BLU School Supplies. The mission of BLU (a brand of Bluesource) – to “provide high quality, low-cost school supplies to nonprofit organizations, enabling them to help more children” – aligns with the goal of the “School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.” Inside the packs were boxes of pencils, a pencil case, a glue stick, a folder, a notebook and other goodies, all of which are integral to the back-to-school season. Children were given their pick of packs from a wide variety of colors and patterns.

Four-year Verizon employee Christian Notten has participated in three backpack giveaways, all of which have been met with “great reception,” resulting in the majority of backpacks being given out to the community. Remaining bags are donated to various charities such as women’s shelters and local schools. For Notten, the most rewarding part of the annual event is “the excitement of giving back to the community.” Those benefiting from TCC and Verizon’s charity showed clear appreciation for the “no strings attached” donation as the event progressed.

Manager Jay Vranas has also participated in three backpack giveaways with the company. TCC and Verizon aim to demonstrate dedication to community through this event and many others. According to Vranas, they’re “always doing something” to help those in need, including schoolchildren and veterans. TCC places a “heavy emphasis on philanthropy,” hosting a charity event every quarter.
