Barnegat Leader Winter Sports Preview

Barnegat Bengals Hoopsters Hope to Overcome Key Losses

Dec 14, 2018

For the first time since becoming head coach of the Barnegat High School boys varsity basketball team, Mike Puorro will not have point guard Mike Revello leading the team on the court. Revello was a freshman when Puorro was hired in 2014, and now the coach will have to find someone to replace the program’s all-time leading scorer.

That appears to be junior Brendan Revello, one of Mike's triplet brothers on the team. The others are Nick and Chris Revello.

But in addition to Revello, others lost to graduation include guard Carson Francisco and forward Alex Grogan. Francisco led the team in scoring and assists while Grogan was the top rebounder. Also gone is key reserve Tommy Krey, who finished third in three-point field goals made.

That quartet resulted in the Bengals coming off the best season in school history last year, as they went 22-7 (10-4) in the B-South division.

“We’re looking to ride the momentum into this season,” said Puorro. “Each of the last two seasons the team has made it to the South Jersey Group 2 Sectional Semi-Finals, while also qualifying for the Shore Conference Tournament, and won our first game there at home against Middletown South. The team is optimistic that continued success will occur.”

Puorro was hoping to lean heavily on senior forwards Brian Finucan and Kyle Morris, who were standouts on the football team. But the 6-4, 225-pound Morris is recovering from a thumb injury sustained during the football season, and has practiced little so far. Once he is healthy, he is expected to be a physical presence under the boards.

Rounding out the roster are senior guards Davis Ciani and Kevin Becker, junior forwards Devyn DeFilipo and Shane Savastano, junior guard Ty’zon Jackson, sophomore guards Laurence Davis, Jaxon Baker, Andrew Vernier and Longan Armstrong, and sophomore guard/forward Jarde Krey.

The Bengals open the season on the road at Lakewood on Friday, Dec. 14, and then play at Donovan Catholic on Tuesday, Dec. 18, before returning home to play Jackson Liberty on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 6:30 p.m.
