Barnegat Leader Spring Sports Preview

Barnegat Boys Lacrosse Starts out With Lopsided Losses

Apr 20, 2018

The Barnegat High School varsity boys lacrosse team is looking to rebound from last season’s 2-13 record with a new coach, but Andrew Villiez’s squad is having a tough time starting out, at 0-5. They have been outscored 64-8.

“We’ve had quite a few players injured, so we haven’t been at full strength,” said Villiez.

“Top returnees are senior attackman and captain Dylan Corbett, junior midfielder Tristan Porcelli and defenseman senior Hunter Morrissey.

“Dylan’s our best scorer,” said the coach. “He had two goals each in the first two games.”

Other returnees are senior attackman Orion Boyer, sophomore midfielder Jason Kaden, senior midfielders Matthew Ugarte and Jimmy Lynch, junior defensemen Hunter Wagner and Matt Davies, senior goalies Julian Schoenberger and Matthew Hoops, sophomore defenseman Brian Kissel and sophomore attackman Jacob Schleicher.

The team also has various newcomers looking to see action: junior midfielders Sean Madej, Brendan Malia, Dillan Balas and Matthew Beagin; junior faceoff specialist Mark Belvett; junior defensemen Philip Gogarty and Timothy Lauterbach; freshman attackman John Porcelli; and freshman midfielder Jerry Weir.

A physical education teacher at the high school, Villiez replaced Ryan Dalon, who had been the only coach the Bengals had since its varsity debut in 2006.

“I was a member of that team,” said Villiez. “I was also a member of the high school’s first graduating class in 2008. It means a lot to me coaching this team. We’ve got our injured players back, so hopefully we can turn this around and get some wins.”  —E.E.
