Barnegat Boys Soccer Has an Experienced Squad

Sep 21, 2018

The Barnegat High School boys varsity team started the season by splitting its first two games, a 5-0 home loss to Lakewood and then a 5-2 win on the road against Keyport. They also had several games postponed due to inclement weather.

Last year, the Bengals had a 9-7 record (5-6 in the Shore Conference B-South). Head coach Michael McCullion, who is in his 11th season, said top returnees are senior forward Ricky Norman, who scored 17 goals and had four assists, and junior forward Matt White, who had 10 goals and nine assists.

“Justin Gomez (a junior) was our center back last year, but this year he’ll be playing his more natural position at forward,” said McCullion.

Other returnees are senior forwards Aidan Tai and Aaron Santora-Douglass; senior defensemen Eugene Fleming and Carlos Morena; senior midfielders Scott Doty, Anthony Irazarry and Liam Lynch-Bell; junior defensemen Sean Toner and Alex Cernansky; junior midfielders Grady Edwards and Alex Zuniga; and sophomore defensemen Kenneth Franke.

A promising newcomer is sophomore forward Maurice Vargas.

“Overall, we’re an experienced team,” said McCullion. “Most of the players already have varsity experience. We’re looking to have a record above 500, compete in the Shore Conference Tournament and succeed in the state playoffs.”

The Bengals have a home game against local rival Pinelands Regional on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 3:45 p.m.  —E.E.
