Barnegat Leader Spring Sports Report

Barnegat Boys Tennis Team Learn Game With New Coach

Apr 21, 2017

It has been a rough season so far for the Barnegat High School boys tennis team, with the squad being shut out in its first three matches.

But that was to be expected. Coaches have long said their team is “rebuilding.” Barnegat head coach Karla Jennings went one better this spring in her preseason assessment: “We anticipate this year to be a teaching season where we focus on rebuilding the team with our underclassmen.”

Jennings lost six players to graduation from a 2016 squad that wasn’t a powerhouse itself, going 5-12. She had only two returning players, junior Jacques Romero and sophomore Zachary Zentz. And the Bengals had the misfortune of opening against two of the better teams in the Shore Conference B South Division, Donovan Catholic and Pinelands.

Newcomers on the squad include Billy Powers, Justin Bach, Matt Ventollo, Matt Daley, Dominic Pisani and Joe McCall. —R.M.
