Barnegat Leader Spring Sports Preview

Barnegat Boys Volleyball Team Rebuilding Around ‘Powerful P’s’

Apr 20, 2018

Where have all the seniors gone? The boys tennis team (see accompanying story) isn’t the only Barnegat High School athletic squad that features a roster dominated by underclassmen in the spring of 2018. The boys volleyball roster is absolutely loaded with them.

The team certainly didn’t suffer when it came to turnout, not with 29 players on head coach Ed Peters’ roster. But just four – outside hitters Zahmere Johnson and Raymond Grant Ramos, middle Donovin Piana, and defensive specialist Brandon Tipiani – will be checking out of BHS this June. They’re teamed up with a dozen juniors, five sophomores and eight freshmen.

Given the team’s youth, it is no wonder Peters says his team’s goals are “to improve as the season progresses,” hopefully ending by qualifying for the State and Shore Conference Tournaments.

If Peters’ goals are to be reached, Barnegat will heavily depend on a handful of veterans including its “Powerful P’s” – the aforementioned Piana, junior middle Parth Patel and junior setter Bobby Perrini – along with sophomore outside hitter Marcuz Sadsad. Their coach said they are “all around players and leaders.”

Peters also expects major contributions from some newcomers, including Tipiani, junior outside hitter Sal Fiorello, a pair of sophomore outside hitters in Aaron Osborn and Shane Savastano, and two freshmen, middle T.J. Stokes and setter Ken Franke.

It may take that many youngsters more than one campaign to jell. The Bengals, who went 3-19 in 2017, have started the 2018 season with six straight losses. —R.M.
