Barnegat Competition Cheerleading Team Busy Prepping for Nationals

Dec 17, 2018

The Barnegat High School Varsity Game Day Competition Cheerleading team already secured a bid to the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Cheerleading Championships back on Nov. 10 by finishing second in the UCA Northeast Championships in Toms River. So the pressure is off the girls until they arrive in Disney World for the Nationals on Feb. 8 to 10.

But if the way the team performed finishing up its fall season is any indication, the Barnegat girls won’t relax until they bring home trophies from Florida. Barnegat took first place in their division and were named overall grand champions at the Randolph Rampage on Nov. 18, and first place again at the Ridge Invitational on Dec. 2.

Barnegat, said coach Jessica McDermott, has a small team this year, but she added that won’t keep them from hoping “to have an extremely fun and successful season.”

“Our goal this year,” said McDermott, “is to continue to rise up to the occasion and be the best that we can be! We focus on the strengths of our routine and continue to work on our weaknesses.”

The team consists of seniors Victoria Leonard, Reannah Cooper, Gianna Spano and Kendal Birch, juniors Zaniyah Harris, Hailey Hill, Kimberley Godfrey and Emma Kelly, and sophomores Destiny Fratianni and Samantha Madej. Those experienced girls will be joined by newcomers Marissa Frusco, a sophomore, and freshmen Rachel Pulig and Brett Meehan.

The team will be busy this winter. It will be visiting Jackson’s Memorial Madness competition on Jan. 12, the Southern Regional High School Rams Invitational on Jan. 19 and the Roxy Rumble on Jan. 26. —R.M.
