Barnegat Cub Scouts Place Flags at Veterans’ Grave Sites

May 31, 2017

Barnegat Cub Scout Pack 26 participated in the American Legion’s “Their Flags Out” program, in which new flags are placed by the gravestones of veterans buried in local cemeteries. Erica Capro, pack president, said the pack was among a group of more than 100 volunteers who were involved in last Saturday’s activity.

“Under the direction of the legion, we placed about 1,000 flags,” said Capro. “We also had help from our Boy Scout troop as well as Girl Scouts and Brownies. Some of the family members of the veterans went with us. It was a great community effort.”

Capro said the project’s aim is to “give the sense of reverence and respect to our veterans.”

“The legion was really touched by this,” she said. “It means a lot to them to see so many young children involved. Some of the youngest kids might not have understood what it was all about, but one day they will.”

Capro said  the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts all participated in Sunday’s memorial service at the gazebo park on Sunday and then marched in the Memorial Day parade. —E.E.
