The high school cross-country season concluded for all the local girls squads on Saturday, Nov. 10, during the NJSIAA Group Championships, but the future looks really bright for Barnegat. Going up against the best in Group II, freshmen Lillian Sarno and Bianca Savoy finished their first seasons with solid runs on the grueling Holmdel Park course, finishing 31st and 55th, respectively. Sarno crossed the finish line with a time of 20:45, while Savoy completed her 3.1-mile trek in 22:06.

Unfortunately, only the top 10 from each group and a small selection of wild cards reach the Meet of Champions, but the two freshmen have given coach Bob Klaslo plenty to smile about this fall.

As a team, Pinelands Regional’s girls competed without frontrunner Jolie Zaccaria, and her absence made a difference for the Wildcats, who finished at the back of the Group II team standings. Still, just the fact Pinelands got through the sectionals was a big deal, and coach Holly Egan’s crew should be an improved one next season.

On Saturday, freshman Jessica Cheney led the way for the Wildcats, crossing the finish line in 109th place overall with a time of 24:57, while senior Jewel Szwed ended up 112th in 25:12, sophomore Morgan Ross placed 121st in 25:41, and freshman Nadya Sturies was right behind her in 122nd at 25:54.

In the Group IV girls race, Southern Regional didn’t have the finish to the season it probably had hoped for, but the Rams’ future also is bright, with most of their starting crew of runners slated to return next fall.

One of two not returning, senior Gianna Citarella, capped her career with a 58th-place finish in 20:57. Behind the Rams’ frontrunner were junior Emily Furlong in 75th with a time of 21:21, junior Jaelyn D’Amelio in 83rd in 21:29, freshman Rachel Short in 96th with a time of 21:47, and senior Katelynn Brischler in 119th at 22:41.
