Midway through last season, Barnegat girls lacrosse coach Lyndsey Torre said her intention was to build the program into a competitive force within the Shore Conference Class B South division.

“We want to be competitive with teams like Lacey, Donovan Catholic and Point Pleasant Borough,” said Torre, who at the time was just weeks into the season as the new head coach. “And we’re going to get there. It’s going to come with experience, but we’re on our way.”

At the end of last spring, the Bengals were 8-8, and it was considered an accomplishment considering the youth on the squad. This spring, a lot of those young players have returned to Torre’s roster, and so far, the Bengals indeed have been a competitive bunch, getting out to a 5-2 start during the first two weeks of the new season.

Most recently, Barnegat scored an impressive, 11-10 victory over Lacey on April 13. Sophomore midfielder Madeline Schleicher was the catalyst in the contest, firing in six goals, while freshman midfielder Alexis Jackson scored twice and gave out a pair of assists. Junior midfielders Kara Ferrigno and Chloe McGee each scored once, while sophomore attacker Maddie Santorelli added a goal and an assist.

So far, those six players have done the bulk of the scoring – with Schleicher leading the way with 25 goals, an average of 3.6 per game, and McGee, Ferrigno and Jackson combining for 26 goals – and their scoring punch likely will have to continue if the Bengals are going to be a force in B South come May. Also adding to the offense have been junior Kyla Rauch and sophomores Heather Dwyer, Jennie Woodcock and Carly Holohan.

As for the defense, the Bengals are anchored by junior Ashley Walter and junior goaltender Gabby Furrule, who so far as racked up 55 saves, an average of almost eight per game. Last season, Furrule split time with Darianna Guiterrez, the only senior on this season’s club.

The rest of the Barnegat roster includes juniors Madison Narozniak, Gabby Pelechaty and Karina Santiago, sophomores Brooklyn Schmalz, Paige Mengegus and Saria Desai, and freshman Ashley Pringle.

On April 10, the Bengals knocked off division foe Manchester, 12-4, behind another six-goal effort from Schleicher, and a day earlier got by Brick, 9-6, as Schleicher recorded three goals and Pelechaty gave out four assists. On April 6, Barnegat squashed Pinelands, 16-1, a day after dropping a 6-5 contest to Jackson Liberty. —D.B.
