After dropping its first three contests to Lacey, Pemberton and Toms River East, the Barnegat High School girls varsity tennis rebounded with a 5-0 victory against Lakewood on Sept. 12.

“This is a rebuilding year as most of my players are underclassmen,” said head coach Sue Rogers. Last year’s squad went 12-9, and won the Shore Conference B-South title for the fifth time with a 10-4 mark.

They lost in the opening round in the South Jersey Group II playoffs.

Players lost to graduation include Amy Wicks, Sue Dennerlein, Corrine Laboy, Amber Vagni and Caitlyn Cordele.

Rogers said in this young season, the most consistent players have been the doubles team of senior captain Grace Rochette and freshman Lily Spagnola. The other doubles team is senior co-captain Anna Cheng and sophomore Pimpakan Lertabakan.

She said junior Jasmine Orozco plays first singles, after having played varsity doubles last year. Twin juniors Kelly and Amber Kantenwein are second and third singles, respectively, and also are moving up from playing varsity doubles.

Rounding out the roster are senior Robyn Heimel, sophomores Kaitlyn Lundy and Neena Singh and freshman Madison Linton.

The Bengals’ next home match is against Jackson Liberty on Monday, Sept. 18, at 3:45 p.m.

Rogers said that off the court, the girls use their tennis skills in community endeavors.

“Six of the girls volunteered at Greenbriar Oceanaire (in Waretown) to be line judges for their mixed doubles championship last week, and the girls volunteer to give weekly tennis lessons to special needs children and adults,” she said. E.E.
